I'm thinking about going to school at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. The school is supposed to be one of the top academic schools in the midwest but it is very small. It has 620 students and the town only has 3500 people. I have lived in California my whole life and the town I live in is considered small and it has 93,000. Is anybody here from kansas and known anything about bethany or lindsborg. Do you guys think I should go. They are giving me a tennis scholarship so I will only have to pay 5,000 dollars a year tuition and they have a great tennis team. What do you guys think. Will I be able to adjust to the small town environment and slow pace.

Bethany has a great reputation, first of all.

I have lived across the world and have attended schools from a private college with 350 students (on the Kansas state line, so I understand about the rural concerns) to a large state university with 35,000 students, to a few in between, including overseas study. As the previous answerer stated, each experience adds to who you are and should be treated as an adventure.

I would add the following: as a member of the tennis team, you are going to be part of a close knit group that enjoys traveling together as well. So you aren't going to be stuck in the middle of nowhere because of your connections to the team. Many smaller schools offer great trips to 'cities' for cultural outings, shopping, etc... so you should have the chance to get out that way as well. I work for a small school (the same school with 350 students that I attended years ago) and we constantly offer concerts, dances, field trips, etc.... for our students and no one complains of being bored. Our students come from across the world - 44 states and 19 countries this semester - and it is fun to watch them adjust to small town life. Probably the greatest asset for schools like Bethany and mine is that you have the opportunity to truly develop life long friendships. You will get to know your coach, your professors, and your classmates much better. Bethany will offer smaller class sizes and everyone will know your name - from the president of the college down. That is a great feeling, believe me.

I have a feeling that you are struggling with whether or not you want to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. If you have to have constant excitement, like breaking rules, and don't like to be held accountable, then Bethany may not be the place for you. If you are looking for a college experience in which you can be nurtured and develop into a leader into adulthood, then give it a shot.

By the way, I thought Wash U in St. Louis was 'the Ivy League of the Midwest.' I think Miami of Ohio, Stephens College, and Grinnell are only a few of the others that claim that as well. The fact is, the rural Midwest is a great place for private education and I suggest you try Bethany. It has a great reputation and I've met numerous folks from there over the years at professional conferences and I am very impressed with them, even though they are some of my college's competition.

I'm not from Kansas, but I've lived in all kinds of places, from large cities to small towns (less than 1000 people). I have lived in hotel rooms, cabins, tents, and on a sailboat. I have lived in my own home, in university residences, in boarding houses, in rental apartments (some rather bad one!!). I have lived alone, with just my husband and me, and with as many as 10 other people in a small house. Every experience adds something to your life. Approach it with a positive attitude, as just another adventure that will contribute to the person you are meant to be. Go for it. We can all adjust to anything if we want to adjust and if we look for the positive in the experience.

If you want to move to the Midwest area and want a large scale school, go to the University of Cincinnati. It is named "the Ivy League of the Midwest."
