Evidence and belief in God are not only mutually exclusive, they are irrelevant. Faith is belief in the face of contradictory evidence or no evidence at all. Many people have a great, driving need to believe in God and life after death. They will believe what they want and discount what they want in order to perpetuate that. It doesn't make them bad, or stupid, it just makes them typical human beings. Most people on the planet believe in some kind of supernatural godly presence. The fact that none of the religions agree with each other would be compelling enough evidence on it's own that they are incorrect, but it doesnt seem to convince any of them.

you have your choices to make...your choices have influences but they don't force you to do/believe anything. People are led by thier own desires.
If external circumstances forced us to do things there would be a lot more crime. Morals would not exist in humans. Our actions would simply be a mechanical response to our enviornments. Choice, in essence, would not exist.
You would also have to vindicate mass murderers - hitler - stalin - Jeffery Dohmer etc as they were all "products of thier enviornments". The fact is, they had choices to make. I have a sexual drive but if tahts all I think about and thats all I give into, who knows what I may turn into. I have choices and my choices are influenced either negatively or positively but they do not force me or anyone else to do anything. It took Ted Bundy, a serial rapist and killer, over a period of twenty years to become the person he was on the day of his first criminal charge - his examination and sentence. 20 yrs of choice.
Just by the fact that every nation has its own set of laws dictates that every man has the ability to choose - despite external influences. There are those who generally obey, and those that generally don't. The law brings an ability to choose. Either to do right, or wrong.
Good question tho

the wisdom of man will never approach the folly of God
A Supreme Being fits in because He created us in His image and His goal was that we worship Him. He let us have our own way to choose if we would - or not.
Scary - isn't it. Some of us are way too smart.
But God showed His Love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. - Apostle Paul

It doesn't without a lot of intellectual gymnastics. For one view of why we believe these things, read "The God Myth" by Richard Dawkins.

i think that the reason for religion is to answer the one question science has yet to truely answer, what happens to us when we die. not just the physical body, but to our emotions, memories, feelings, personality, and everything that made us different.

sometimes we should not believe all we read. the bible was put together in the 6th century, incorporating what the churches decided what we should believe.
This book was then said to be the sacrosanct embodiment of all that we should believe.
We invented god to define our own behaviour.
