According to Greek tradition, the Olympic Games began in 776 B.C. in the town of Olympia in southern Greece. at first the olympic games remained only for 1 or 2 days and the events were wrestling and runnig only. As the popularity increased the games were increased and then the Olympics lasted for 5 days.
the athletes were male. winners had crowns of laurel leaves placed on thier heads. they were given a banquet and life pension.
as time went on, the quality of the games detoriated so much that the emperor of rome banned them in A.D. 394.
In 1875, archaeologits discovered the ruins of ancient Grecian stadium. This caused renewed interestand in 1896, the first official Olymics were held in Athens.
