It is a sentance that sums up your entire essay. It usually is presented at the last sentance of your first paragraph.
I was always told that you should summarize each of your body paragraphs into one word and those three words should go into your thesis statement.

A thesis is the debatable topics or fundamental points you are going to discuss in your essay....
i.e. . Two resolutions tried to take place, the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. They were hardly successful in resolving the issue and actually further created political, social, and economical upheavals between the North and the South.
The last sentence is my thesis statement because in my essay I'm going to discuss the economic, political and social upheaveals bet. the North and South because of the Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850.
For English,
However, I just looked up this example:
Here is an example of an actual thesis:
"John Milton's poetry includes many biblical references, but he often embellishes on scripture to suit his needs."
This claim requires some proof—some supporting evidence or explanation, and that is what makes this a debatable point.
Again going back to the topics you're going to discuss in your essay.
Do you understand what I mean or....?
I haven't read "To Kill A Mocking Bird" yet so I can't help you write your thesis but if you follow the steps, you'll do fine.

Your question is vague. Basically, a thesis is an arguable statement supported by facts. The facts that do not support the argument are the anti-thesis. And when you make the thesis and the anti-thesis, agree with each other or support each other, that is synthesis.
Example -- Me: My sister is ugly (thesis). My sister's boyfriend: Your sister is hot! (anti-thesis). Me: OK, if you think she looks good, she may not be as ugly as I think she is (synthesis).
