Really not clear what you mean.

If you mean protecting them from becoming extinct...the Conservative government in Canada (where I live) passed a law last year which provides $100 a month in child-care support for each child under the age of 6, which a parent can spend on daycare...or simply be an income supplement for a stay-at-home parent. It's only a small amount but it makes a (small) difference.

If you mean protection from abuse by their spouse, like others have said, alimony and criminal law provide that protection. No, it's not perfect, but it's about as good as the government can provide - it's really up to individuals to marry with their eyes open.

I'm a stay at home mom, due to the fact I've an Autistic child, but what is it we need protecting from?

A husbands and wife's will should be to support each other and to work together as a whole, protecting each other. so the question is from what do they need protecting?

I'm assuming you mean from a financial standpoint, in which the protection you likely have is alimony if you were to divorce. Other than that you have to take care of yourself...
