For most positions, employers are looking for someone in a full suit (blazer, slacks, and tie). Even with this look, if the job is more casual, you can take the blazer off, and still look presentable in button-down shirt, slacks and tie. The latter look I just mentioned - known as business casual - can also work for interviewing at less-formal jobs. As always, closed-toe shoes (preferable dress shoes) is the best option. Make sure your socks are one singular color, or a subtle pattern. Don't wear any silly socks or ties with phrases, etc., as your prospective employer may look down upon you.

If you're a man, and depending on the job: If professional position, wear a suit or nice slacks and a white starched shirt with button-down collar. People check out your shoes. Make sure that your socks match the hemline of your pants. Make sure that if you are wearing brown toned clothing that your shoes are brown and not worn out looking. Shine them. Make sure that your hair is well groomed, freshly cut, and no neck, ear or nose hair where it shouldn't be. Make sure that you are clean from head to toe and your nails and hands are well groomed - cuticles and nails need to be well groomed on men as well as women. No heavy cologne. That's a big turn off. Just use a good antiperspirant and wash with a good antibacterial soap for a just showered fresh smell. If you wear glasses, make sure that they are an updated style and not big framed. I don't know how many perverts that wear glasses own those big weird things.....Go to the library or buy a magazine - GQ or other gentlemen's magazine and see what I am talking about. The best thing you can wear is confidence, and if you look good it helps inside as well. Good luck.

Appearance counts at the job interview
Sure you have the credentials to nab that new job, but do you have the right look to knock ’em dead at the interview?
Too often when looking for a job, we concentrate on getting the resume just right - worrying how we look on paper - when we should be just as concerned with how we look in person.
Here are some tips on how to make that first impression be a lasting one for your next job interview:
• Investigate the dress code. The standard dress code for a job interview used to be a conservative business suit. But today's dress codes have run amok. Many companies have scaled back their standards of dress to business casual or even as casual as wearing jeans and sneakers. You can call the receptionist at the prospective employer's office for tips on what employees there wear.
• Be clean and pressed. No matter what the dress code is, be sure that your clothes are clean and pressed and free of any rips, stains, or pet hair. Make sure your shoes are polished. Scuff marks on your shoes can reveal a lot about a person, such as a lack of forethought and attention to detail.
• Wear your smile, which can be the gateway to your personality.
• Keep your business accessories to a minimum. Don't go charging into an interview armed with a briefcase, pocketbook, portfolio, etc. Women should carry a nice briefcase or portfolio only and leave the overstuffed handbag at home. Men should also carry a briefcase or nice leather- or vinyl-bound portfolio to carry resume, references, or other pertinent documents. And don't forget to turn off your mobile phones and pagers before you go to your interview.
• Consider your personal appearance. The cliche that ‘‘it's the clothes that make the man’’ is a falsehood. Who's going to remember your clothes if they can't take their eyes off your bad dye job or chipped nail polish? Be sure your whole appearance is polished, not just your shoes. Also go easy on the perfume, cologne, and makeup.
Interview Appearance
* Dress conservatively. Suits for men and women. No pantsuits for women.
* White shirts are preferred for men. Double-breasted suits are fine, as long as they are conservative colors.
* Women should ensure that their skirts are an appropriate length for sitting.
* Men and women should understate or avoid cologne.
* Make sure that shoes are polished and accessories are kept to a minimum.
* If you have long hair, make sure that it is neat, or pull it back.
* Remember that you are striving to ensure that your appearance is appropriate, professional and not distracting.
