It gets on my nerves too.
I wanted some words that people use for swearing that aren't actual curses, and loads of people advised me to count to ten, and to take control etc etc, but I needed the list for an essay, not because I have trouble swearing!!
Grrrr

I assume you're talking about when you ask for advice, but the person either gives you advice on something you're not asking about or goes off on another tangent.
Quite simply, human beings are ego-centric. When we hit puberty our ego centricism comes back full force, and not all of us properly learn how to empathize and think extrovertly. So generally speaking our unconscious is asking ALL THE TIME "How does this relate to ME?" and we don't have enough conscious awareness that we're doing this to focus on the other person.

Some people just can't be happy unless they feel that they are better than someone else. By offering help they are trying to show that they are better off than you.
