At the moment the core 2 duo/extreme rapes several times over any AMD CPU.

As one said www.tomshardware.com for cpu benchmarks. The Dual Core 2 of Intel is the fastest, but doesn't matter that much in games, as most games still depend on the video card and not the cpu.
AMD right now, is the "economic" build for a computer. Newer amd cpus will be coming out, but noone is quite sure if they will take the lead once again.
