Like a lot of rock, rap is about an unreal world with some less than healthy aspects. Radio has become so commercialized and aimed at locking you in as a customer, variety in music has really suffered. You have to go looking for better stuff online. Rap started out being an intelligent social commentary, as when Grandmaster Flash and Afrikaa Bambataa released things you could actually understand. Now its almost all aggressive, destructive and mush-mouthed, except when someone is yelling F**K. That's not very artistic.
In the end, its up to you. I'd suggest that you start looking more into hip-hop proper, jazz and artists like Tom Waits, who go off in their own very personal directions. Rap is very narrow and aimed at USING you to make money as much as being fun for its own sake. If you think its leading you into "bad things," that should be a strong clue that its lacking something important as music, which should be enriching and fun rather than oppressive. If a message is about anger as often as not, well, do you want your fun to be angry?
Also keep in mind a very telling point: MOST rap is bought by young white men. That sounds pretty weird for what is allegedly a black thing, so think about how it speaks to aggression more than anything else. Frankly, any "music" that yells, cusses and insults the listener that much isn't worth a lot overall. Just because a thing is popular doesn't mean its always good. Think for yourself and demand better for your life than letting a negative force decide your path.

Rap music cannot influence you to do bad things, this is called a scapegoat honey. The people you hang around with are probably the problem. In 3 years you will be legally responsible for your action so you need to get it together now. Be the person you are inside not the person anyone wants you to be. This is the time you may need parental guidance and support because you are now "discovering" who you are and who you are going to be. Keep your head up and stay positive.

Plenty of music has bad messages but you shouldn't really take them seriously. If you really are uncable of controlling your own actions then you should at least steer clear of the bad rap.
In responce to a few who have answered this question, It's got NOTHING to do with the fact she listens to rap. And besides most rap is about harmless things if you stop judging it by a few mainstream artists! Do you people who consider rap a bad influence believe listening to Black Sabbath and Kiss will make you a suicidal satanist?!
Oh? Shut up then.

The music doesn't influence you to do things ... it gives you permission to act out the bad things you want to do. Listen to music with positive feelings, words, messages, emotions. YOU are responsible for your actions, not the music you listen to, the movies/TV you watch or the advertising in magazines. Be proud of who you are!

It's just music....okay I know that music is the "loud expression of feelings" but especially nowadays the artists are very often controlled by the managment,so they don't sing or do what they want.
Even if they sing a song about something, think of it that even if they talk about sex, drugs, bitches, robbery and I don't know what,
they would never do the same.
'Cause if they would do the same, then they would't be standing in front of the microphone.Sorry for my english,I'm not so good.

Get out of here, what? are you backing that A** up? are you taking out your glock? what do you listen to, three 6 mafia? are you tearing the club up or sipping on some sizzurp? It's not the music it's your crew the people you surround yourself with, go hang out with the chess club or the pokemon club or something. Don't blame 50 cent and Nas for your problems.

Start listening to only real music. If it has no melody and can be "performed" by only one person and a computer, it's probably not real music. Real music uses these thing called instruments. Instruments are really neat things like a guitar, piano, wooden drums, trumpet, bass guitar, violin, keyboard, stuff like that. Really cool!

When u listen to a rap song that is full of explict lyrics try to listen it as an entertainment to your soul and ignore the lyrics(when they are bad).
