Is it a faint smell? If not faint, get off the computer right now and call the gas company, it is an emergency. They should have someone on call 24/7 365 days a year because it is that dangerous.
If it is very faint, there are several possibilities. Gas appliances do smell a very VERY tiny bit, normally. It has to be extremely faint for this to be the problem, see above.
Check for leaking joints. Use a solution of liquid soap and water. Put it on fitting and look for bubbles. Also use on valve, they can leak too.
It is possible that the valve is not shutting off 100%. Most likely is the joints.

If the pilot light is on you might smell a hint of gas. Mine give off a gas smell when they're first lit.
But if you think its something serious I would call the gas company.
Also get a carbon monoxide detector if you don't have one.

You have a leak. Ring the gas board or a licenced gas fitter.
