Because we don't know the health history of your individual pets we cannot "precribe" any diet for them (your vet should do that).

But senior pets do require special nutrition to help them maintain healthy bones and joints. Iams and Eukanuba both have formulas for senior pets. We alo give our senior dogs Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfate for their joints -- in doses precribed by their vet.

At our shelter we feed the dogs a modified raw food diet. It's based around kibble, but supplemented with raw meat, raw eggs and veggies, and whatever vitamins, herbs and supplements each individual dog may need.

I had a peke-a-poo that lived to be almost 17. We fed him kibbles & bits for most of his life until he had a problem at the age of 13 or so and had to have some teeth removed. Then we gave him lil' caesar--a softer variety.

The whole time we would give him a few treats here & there, and always a little bit of "people food" although never enough that he could live off of them. We made sure he always had to eat his dog food to be satisfied.

I'm sure an expert or a vet would tell you different, but that is what we did.

IAMS and Eukanuba are NOT good foods - they used to be until years ago Proctor and Gamble bought out the company and dumbed the foods down to increase their profit margin.. Iams is way over priced for its quality (well I guess they have to pay for the commercials) PLUS both are linked to cruel animal testing www.iamscruelty.com
by-products are one of the harmful ingredients in this food - beaks feet and feathers - it isa cheap filler but the WORST part is they are preserved with a chemical pesticide Ethoxyquin (considered part of the by-product so not mentioned on most lables) anyhow you can read up about how bad Ethoxyquin is on your own...

look for a better food which contains Glusosamine/Chondroitin for joint/bone health.. not often in cat food - its more of a problem for dogs..
also YUCCA is good for help with arthritis...

you cannot get good food in grocery store or Wal Marts..
you didnt mention what country you are in - so its hard to name brands

Use a good quality pet food. I use Iams as that is what my breeder recommended.

The other thing is have their teeth checked as it can be a source of big problems for cats and dogs. The mouth holds a lot of bacteria. It can affect their hearts and other organs.
