Go with wild_eep on this regarding other countries' lack of organisation.
Not all UK addresses have .co, that's just indicative of a corporate address. The famous .com used to be purely commercial, now anyone can have a .com address if they wish.
Hope that helps.

A lack of neatness on the part of .ie, .fr and .de
They just didn't get into the subdividing habit early on. In theory that makes the web cluttered like an over-full filing cabinet. In practice, anyone using subdivisions to make something different is probably at some scam, so it hardly matters. www.amazon.net.uk? www.ebay.org.uk?

This is because the UK has specific extensions to show the surfer what kind of site they are visiting.
.co.uk = commerical run site
.gov.uk = government
.org.uk = non profit organisation (in theory)
Some other countries domain structures are much less organised.

I think it has something to do with .uk standing for something other than United Kingdom as well, like Ukraine or something? Stops any confusion with others. Or I could be completely wrong...
The UK Parliament's website is an exception- http://www.parliament.uk

they don't. maybe because the sites you look at are commercial, which are .co.(then country name).(ex: .co.uk is a commercial united kingdom site)
united kingdom sites are just ".uk"
