I mean, if, for example, you're stocked with WRs and the best player available is a WR, how does it make sense to pick a WR, especially if all your team needs is DE's?

You always draft the top player because you think your team will benefit from his, talent, confidence, charisma and all that. But also, all the hype and media attention that'll be surrounding the best player will put your team in the spotlight. isn't that reason enough?

Chuck Noll in Pittsburgh came up with Draft the best
available athlete in the 70`s after his draft guru an asst
coach named Charlie Weaver quit ,he was credited with
drafting all the hall of famers. He refused to live in Hilton
Head in the off season with the emperor, as all the other
coaches did . It did not work for him Noll.It was not until
Bill Cowher got Tom Donahoe Directer of football operations
fired 5 years ago did we start drafting impact players
again That ability is one of Cowhers biggest strengths
We are really going to miss him

The trade value of a player has to be considered. In your example it might be possible to trade one of your wr for a better DE than you could draft.
