its not about how long its your diet if you work out 1 hour a day on your abs but eat like a pig and drink alcohol it does not matter you will not see your abs so diet well drink lots of water and do about 15 -30 mins. every other day with about 4 days off a week.

Would the time vary if it were an UGLY slender guy?
Either way, 20 min a day minimum, 6 days/wk to start. After you are at the point you want to maintain, three times a week should do it. It will take a little while but if you push it, your end results aren't nearly as defined for some reason. *shrugs*
