Most Europeans don't hate America.
Those that do generally mean the American goverment, Neo-Con right-wing Christian hawks. The ones who talk about manifest destiny and think that any action is justifiable if it aids America (or there narrow, bigotted view of what the USofA is)
ps calling a country 'America' when that refers to two continents is maybe a wee bit arrogant.
Personally I like the US. I like its TV programs, movies, the idea of freedom and social mobility, OK it has rubbish sports but no-where is perfect.

Most Europeans dont "hate america". This talk about anti-americanism is highlyu over rated. (P.S. side bar, beware when you get your world view from Fox news take it with a huge grain of salt.)
As an American have you ever critisized your government? Is that anti-american or IS THAT WHAT "AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT"???
Many Europeans (and other foreigners even we Canadians)
have issues with:
1) some american foreign policy. They often also have SIMULAR issues with the foreign policies of some EUROPEAN countries, but USA is the LEADER and gets the brunt of the critism. This is par for the course of being a super power and getting involved in the world stage.
2) people sometimes have issues with the "pushy" american, the american who tells everybody he sees that his country is the greatest in the world and demands to be treated like a king, whereas the 19 americans you are friendly and behave respectfully abroad dont leave the same impression. These kind of people exist everywhere but the USA is a superpower
3) people have issues with the fox news type world view that sees the world in black amd white and ignores the fact that its mostly grey.
4) Idealists always have issues with some of the things big businesses do. The USA is the richest country in the world and has some of the largest businesses in the world. So again, you can see where that idealism will target.
5) George W. Bush alienated people across the globe with his my way or highway approach. Dont think less popular president globally in memory except possibly Reagan who was in his time very unpopular with idealists because he was seen as a war monger bent on sending the world to nuclear war. The Gipper image forgets what actually that era was like. He was met with tons of protests etc.
6) With respect to foreign policy the Monroe doctrne makes the USA powers that be unpopular in South America and central america. This recentment is MUCH stronger than that in Europe. You go to chili and ask ppl wat they think of USA and they may talk about some of US interfrence there. Why is Chavez popular?
Idealists link the IMF with poverty. Im personally not sure but certainly it is a carot used to get behaviour US givernment desires but it does do some good as well?
Dream City of Europeans to travel to? Seriously, it is New York.
As for the who it depends. the pushy american can be for example a black women like say Oprah trying to get in a store in Paris after its closed cause she's a celebraty. On the other hand that same woman might be viewed as a saint for opemning a school for girls in africa!!!
There are people who do hate America. Those are the people who go out of there way to kill americans not the ppl who sometimes excer\cise their right of free speech.

mostly America government, but the people as well. if you happen to be an open minded American and speak another language - Europeans will have respect for that person then.

First of all, I don't think most Europeans hate America. I think some of them dislike our country's current policies. Actually, I've heard many Americans spout disparaging remarks about Europe.

They're talking about our government. Just like when American media paints Iran or North Korea as the enemy, we don't actually have a problem with North Koreans or Iranians as people, jsut their government is opposed to ours.

Most of the Europeans? wowwww!!! you have succeed something I don't : I live in Europe and I do not know all Europeans, my oh my, tell me how did you achieve that.
Now without being ironic. They like american people, they even like many things of USA as country. What they do not like is the the way your goverment deals with other countries. There is a BIG difference between what a goverment does and the normal people.

Well... it they watch American television, they will likely get the mistaken idea that all of us live in mansions and are wealthy. My sister lived in Japan and she said that the Japanese she met were convinced that all Americans were wealthy and lived in mansions, and that she could not convince them otherwise.
Countries, like children, get angry when big brother stops them from hurting each other. If it was not for the United States, those countries would still be living as slave labor camps under Nazi Germany. But people being people have to rationalize their inability to take care of themselves. Unfortunately, that rationalization is to hate those who repeatedly come to their rescue, which in this case is the United States repeatedly rescuing the countries in Europe.
Note to European countries: Calvary charges on horseback against German tanks was a bad idea.

I admit that I am prejudiced against anyone who'd tout that they are proud to be american, and dismiss everything else.
Whatever flavour of "foreign" they happen to be, doesn't really matter.
--
I'm sure France and Britain are thankful for "rescuing" them during WW2, however it is questionable whether communist rule was that much better than what a short lived nationalistic german rule would've been. The "rescue" theory is incredibly shallow and arrogant.

I am sure that if you heard them say that, they are referring to our government. Not the people. Most countries are like the american people and get mad at their own government leaders just like we do.
