If you enroll in a community-college (also known as a "junior college"), they offer all kinds of courses such as painting, music, learning a new language or computer skills, sports (tennis, aerobics, golf), etc., etc. Classes at community colleges aren't too expensive and they range from 6 weeks to 12 or 18 weeks. [Just to clarify, you don't enroll as a "student" -- instead, you can try to enroll as a "member" of the community. They have specific classes that are offered to adults in the community who aren't "college students." Call them and ask first.]
As for activities, it really depends on which state/s you are visiting. If you're visiting the west coast, you should definitely check-out the various beaches and of course the amusement parks (Disneyland, Sea World, Knotts Berry Farm, etc). There are also tons of museums but you have to really research and plan ahead of time. You could go shopping at many huge malls or outlets, and then treat yourself to the various cuisines available (from Indian, Chinese, Peruvian and of course, good old American foods).
Also, you can visit the many awesome national treasures we have such as Mt. Rushmore, Yosemite Park, The Grand Canyon, Washington D.C., etc.
There really is lots to do. It just depends on where exactly you're visiting and planning ahead of time. A good place to get information is at a tourist/visitor bureau of the place you are staying at. Search in the internet. Tons of information. Hope this helped. . . Good Luck and have a wonderful stay!

To be on the safe side just do a couple of visits of one to two weeks each time. However, no matter how long or short your visits are for do be prepared to be questioned by immigration. My son was studying in England for a nine month course, and I visited him a few times staying two weeks each visit. They were most interested as to why I was visiting and where I would be staying. I truly wanted to visit him and do some sightseeing as well, and I was staying in an apartment. That was the truth and was satisfactory to the officials. I can't imagine going for a six month period how much more questioning I would receive especially given the restrictions placed on immigration these days-no matter yours is only a visit. One official who interviewed me was very abusive bordering more on interrogation. I think if you do insist to visit for a few months make absolutely sure you have more than enough funds. Take Donna's advice including the advice about health insurance. Make sure you have proof of coverage. Main thing is to go by the book and hopefully you will be approved. As for why they could deny your visa, well, they are the ones in control and can deny it for any reason they choose even if it seems unfair to you and me.
