What is the difference between a Sonate, Sonata, and a Sonatine in a piano composition?

Sonate and Sonata are the same musical form, just titled in different languages. The sonatina (or sonatine) is a different musical form from the sonata--it is shorter, and the movements of the sonatina are usually lighter. Sonatinas were often written by composers as teaching pieces for their students who weren't ready to play sonatas yet.

Besides the difficulty level already pointed out, sonatinas usually lack the long development section of the traditional sonata form.
