Honestly, because they have probably already told you in the past, when you acted like you were listening, but you really weren't, or they have given you subtle hints for a very long time, again you didn't pick up on these, about whatever it is you are talking about.

Because usually this phrase is brought up when someone might be sensitive to the topic, or intimidated by your possible reaction to the discussion of the topics content she feels maybe only you are special enough to share "what you don't know" with. To me this means "I really want to share something with you that is important to me, with both of us being in a quiet and serious moment for this discussion" It is sensitive time, and sometimes that's pretty nice, isn't it? If pattern shows it to be a manipulation, like icecool opines, just tell her that you may discuss it with her when she is able.

They expect you to already know the answer. In a way they are putting you down, making you feel stupid like you don't know them or what they want. They are wrong in doing this, since communication is the most important factor in a relationship.

Usually they've told us guys or shown signs several times in the past. This is usually a sign that they want you to listen closer from now on. Who knows?

Because they really don´t know. They just pretend that they know everything and it´s used sometiems as a catch to see if you are telling lies.
