To replace the old ones that are being taken out of service after sitting around for over 20 years. It's called upgrading.

If they are, it would be because of the increase of nuclear weapons being built by other countries such as Iran, North Korea and possibly others. Keep in mind, that even when nuclear weapons were reduced and disarmed, many years ago, there were still enough in storage to practically destroy the world.

Sadly the primary reason is because the defense industry in general, & weapons production in particular are a very profitable segment of our economy.
The folks who stand to profit in these industries carry a great deal of political clout & so we build "newer & better" weapons of all types.
Some of the new weapons are truly improved, but let's be honest....we possess enough firepower to destroy the ENTIRE world several times over.....and much of the money might be better spent upgrading our schools,transportation & infrastructure!!

We are NOT building up the stockpile of nuclear weapons.
If we were, the UN would be implementing sanctions on the United States.

If so, probably because we think it's going to intimidate China or North Korea.
Nothing would surprise me under the current administration honestly. You could tell me they were building giant slingshots to fire pallet-loads of $100 bills into outer space and I could see that happening.
