My son has been wrestling since grade school and is now a senior. I've watched all the matches but never understood how the points work for take down, recovery etc. I know what the pin is (He gets lots of those!) but how many points? Thanks!

First of all, why don't you just ask your son about the points? I'm sure he can tell you them.

Anyways, this is all from memory of me wrestling in high school. I believe that a take down = 3 pts., reversal = 2 pts., escape = 1 pt., near fall (pending on how many seconds it is) = 3 - 5 pts.

in indiana,
takedown&reversals-2 pts
escapes-1 pt
near fall- 2 or 3 pts (depending on time spent on back)
injury- every minute you spend injured, you give the other guy 1 pt

team points
a decision is 3 points for the team-if you beat your opponent by a spread of1-7
major decision is 4 team points-win by 8-14 points
technical fall is 5 points- if you win by 15 points, the match is stopped when this happens
a pin is 6 points

wach state scoring system varies
here in Illinois
Takedown=2
reversal=2
escape=1
near fall(pin) 1-3 points depending how long he has his shoulders to the mat 3 points would almost be a pin
