I believe that Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority are truly trying to maintain a peaceful co-existence with the Israelis. However, Hamas seems to be constantly attempting to undermine any tentative, fragile peace accord. What if Israel teamed up with the P.A. to forcibly disarm/destroy Hamas? This would eliminate a common foe, as well as help to create an atmosphere of unity between the two entities.

Don't be fooled by Abbas in his nice business suit.

Abbas' goal is to destroy Israel thought the so-called "staged plan" that is, to first get a small state in Judea/Samaria and then use that as a launching pad to "finish Hitler's work" as they call it.

Abbas was Arafat's right-hand man and the brains behind the Munich Olympic Massacre. He also write a "Ph.D" thesis on how the "Holocaust never happened".

The only disagreement between Fatah and Hamas is on the best method to destroy Israel, and which gang should lead the way.

This is not realistic, as Hamas is supported by a large percentage of the Palestinian population and efforts to forcefully disarm Hamas would probably result in a big civil war. There are already fights between Hamas and Fatah and it doesn't seem that Hamas would give up their power without a big fight. But it's true that with Hamas there is no peace possible as their aim is the total destruction of Israel and they say that whoever wants to make peace with Israel is a traitor. Due to the support Hamas has in the Palestinian population I don't see any solution now.

No,Hamas too was ready to negotiate, but Israel rejected them from the start, saying that they are not a reliable partner in peace talks...Abbas,on the other hand, would do anything to please the western powers, even if this won't be in Palestinians best interests...Destroying Hamas is not a solution, even tough both Israel and US would like it...It seems that Bush is sending millions to the Fatah security forces,in order to overthrow the Hamas led government...Destroying Hamas would probably lead to a civil war, which if for Israel is great,it's not so good for the Palestinians...
And not even the negotiations between Israel and PA won't lead anywhere, because Israel wants Palestinians to recognize them in the actual border, which if for Abbas would be OK,I don't think that the rest of Fatah would agree with it...

It might work except for the fact that Muslims are involved. People forget that Palestinians ARE Muslims. This whole idea subsequently destroys any kind of peace accord since Muslims are, by and large, against peace. Sorry, but this is not an indictment of Muslims and Islam but it is the answer to the question. Hard facts are hard to swallow sometimes. I truly wish that there would be peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis but there won't be until the Palestinians stop the homicide bombers and they stop the hatred.

Caveat: I am not a big fan of Israel.

Would be a perfect solution in a perfect world.
However, many Israelis would not want to ally themselves with Palestinian

and it would look, to many Palestinians, that Abbas was taking the side of the Israelis over fellow Palestinians and was betraying them.

It would probably create more tention than unity
and more support for Hamas over Fatah

:( sorry

They will never get along....it sucks but everyone knows it. Unless aliens come down and start attacking both of them and they find a common enemy.....there will never be a "peaceful co-existence".
Also, the Israelis are just as stubborn as the Pals. And until those Jews can accept an agreement in which they dont benifit from monetarily or at least come out on top, once again, it will not work.

The Palestinians will never go for that, because it might work.
