Chemical imbalance causes compulsive/addictive behavior...that in turns can lead to addictions to drugs, alcohol, smoking, anything...BUT....they can quit with the help of therapy by a psych doc and the correct medications to control the chemical imbalance......It takes treatment and being sure they continue the medications just like someone with diabetes or heart disease etc

I believe it is both. I am addicted to marijuana believe it or not. I have been a smoker since I was 14 and I am 36 now. I have tried everything to quit. I think if I had some sort of pills to help the imbabance I could get this monkey off my back. If you are addicted to some chemical, all I can say is good luck.
