Our 51 plate Peugeot 307 heater blower stopped working, I looked on here but couldnt find a solution, I checked all the fuses, all ok, so I striped out the dash and found the rheostat plug had melted. It will need a new part of the loom and a new rheostat.

Here is how to find it.

1. Remove the carpet shield above the acc, brake and clutch pedals, (UK Right hand drive)

2. Remove the heater ducting located above and behind the pedals (the part you would need to remove this to change the pollon filter.).

3. Reach inside the large hole in the heater box, at the top you will feel the rheostat, twist it through 45 degrees and it will then come down into the heater box with its plug still attached.

4. unclip the plug and retreve the rheostat, look at the electrical connection pins on the rheostat, if they look burned or slightly overheated then inspection of the plug that is part of the loom is required. continued in my own answer!!!!!

5. To look at the plug that is part of the loom, I found it quite easy to remove the dash pod (displays clock, radio info etc) Just push it up and out and it will pop off. you can now reach (with one finger) down take hold of the wire that feeds the rheostat and wiggle it up through the hole where the pod had been.

6. if its burned, you need to remove it, first unplug the feed to the heater fan motor, (its on the opposite side of the heater box), feed the wire accross the other side, gently pull the wire down and it will bring the rheostat wire and plug with it, un plug the sensor a bit further down.

7. remove the centre of the dash, (just a few torxs) feed the wire towards where the radio had been, unplug it from the back of the heater control panel then follow it round to the left where it joins the loom at a plug, undo this and the heater loom is now removed.

8. Buy a new rheostat and heater loom, refit, problem solved.

9. good luck

This is abit late but the plug melts because of the resistance in the reostat, common fault, the reostat is placed in the air flow to keep it cool but us cold british need heat and the fan is always on full to keep us warm and demist windows! doesn't matter which manufacturer it is

If only you had posted this a month ago. I had the same fault as you and took my 307 Rapier 2002 plate to the main dealer. What a mistake 4 hours labour in all £455. I was told this was not a common fault and that they had never replaced one before. But I bet there are lots of owners being told that. Also I had new discs fitted to mine at 15000 miles and was told they are only covered for 12000 so that was more money. Also wait till the rear suspension bushes start knocking around 50000. Still got off the point a bit but thanks for the posting.

These cars are regarded as difficult to repair,That means that even simple jobs take time ,An auto electrician would have been able to repair the loom; After finding the fault and practically taking the car to pieces to get at it. But all this takes a great deal of time and a main dealer has a duty to do this job correctly. And time is money you see this on the bills. As for the cars are crap ,I agree. Buy Japanese you can drive for years without any problems whatsoever. I do.
