I'd do day trips. Neither are very far.

I honestly were to Cozumel, Cancun, and Playa del Carmen numerous cases. once you cruise, extremely oftentimes you visit all or any of the places you've listed, quite oftentimes Cozumel. Getting between Cozumel and Cancun, on a ferry, is a 40 minute boatride over no longer so delicate waters. be sure you're taking a Bonine (action disease pill 4-6 hours in the previous taking the ferry). social gathering communities travelling from the u . s . oftentimes visit Cancun.

Stay in PDC, for Tulum and Chichen Itza. If you rent a car and are big on ruins, see Ek Balam and Coba too. Coba and Tulum you can do in one day and Chichen Itza and Ek Balam in one day (although you'll need to start early to get both in in one day).

Valladolid as already mentioned is a nice colonial city, and you'll pass it on your way to Chichen Itza/Ek Balam. If you are looking to go as far away as Merida or the ruins at Uxmal, Labna, Kabah etc. then you'll want to stay overnight.

Don't stay near Chichen Itza. They are not that far as the others said. If you want to break up the journey for some reason, though try stay in valladolid which I personally think is a wonderful town:

I would get on the catamaran and go to the isle majares (island of woman - not really just the name) It is starting to get some tourism but, if you want to see the locals go there! They also have great dolphin park and art peninsula. Very cheap to go over as well!! Also, Cozumel is quite nice!!

You need to look at the cost, unfortunately your family needs will play a big role in your decision. If it is warm enough you could camp out. It all depends on how MUCH it is going to cost to accomplish what needs to be done. (Very open question.)
