Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain from 1493 to 1898. On July 25, 1898 Puerto Rico became a colony of the US. In 1917 Puerto Ricans became US Citizens. In the mid 1950's Puerto Rico became a Commonwealth of the USA.
Puerto Ricans cannot be considered immigrants because Puerto Rico is part of the USA, and nobody can immigrate within their own country.
