Laws are different, I can only speak to Michigan.

ERs are mandated reporters, that is they MUST report any thought of possible child abuse. Any injury that looks odd, or any serious injury or death that could possibly be an accident, but there was not a realiable witness to back up the care takers story
(an old enough child..another adult).

ERs call the police and social services. They investigate the charge by interviewing the child, witnesses, family members and going to the house. The other children in the home are often removed pending the investigation.

It is like any crime, they take statements, go to the scene, take photos. If they are satifisfied no abuse is taking place, the children are returned home....if there is significant concern, they are removed...if there is concern of neglect but not serious, and the parents are cooperative and the children not in danger the children are returned with monitoring and educational programs.

That is if the abuse is coming from home, it could be happening at school or somewhere else.

I will tell you. would tell the person who brought the child in that they have to run some tests or x-rays and that the person could not go with the child due to safety reasons with the machines and all. Then they would completely remove the child from the situation. Take it somewhere in the hospital where the person could not find it. Meanwhile the police have already been called and are on their way. The police will arrive and remove the person who brought the child in. Social services has been called too and they are on their way and probably have arrived also. They will determine the injuries to the child and try to figure out who caused them. They will determine where the child goes from the hospital. If the child has to be admitted, they also will decide who gets to see the child.

It is a fast moving process that is put in place to insure the safety of the child. You wouldn't believe how fast the whole thing goes and how well executed it can be.
