"The Note" was originally about suicide, according to songwriters Michele Ray and Buck Moore. Inspired by a story on TV about the topic, "the note" the song refers to was originally a suicide note, and the song included lyrics such as "the hand that held the gun."

But country music had been getting a bum rap in recent years about being too depressing. Deciding the tune was too morbid, Ray and Moore changed the suicide note into a love note, and lines like "the hand that held the gun" into "the hand that held the pen."

"The Note" was written in the early 80's and has been recorded by Gene Watson, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, .Daryle Singletary, and Doug Supernaw.
