Hey there,
Wiping a computer clean and starting over is a good thing. However, if you are doing the same things that caused the problem in the first place, you probably have the same problem you had when you decided to wipe it clean and start over.
If you have virus protection, spyware protection, and all the latest patches, etc, my next guess would be hardware. If you are hearing a "ka-tick, ka-tick, ka-tick" that is your hard drive letting you know that it is just about dead.
There are three things in your computer that are constantly in a state of dying.
1. Hard drives
2. Power supplies
3. Every cooling fan.
It is only matter of time before they die.

I had the same problem over the weekend. I checked the cpu temperature and it was 75 degree C. I figured something is blocking the air from blowing the cool air to the heat sink - DUST. I took out the CPU cooler, disassemble the fan, and washed it and let it dry up. Put everything back and temperature goes down to around 58 degree C. Shut down problem seems to be gone after 2 days usage. Not sure if you have the same problem. Don't forget to apply thermal grease between the heat sink and CPU. Another reason your computer will automatically restart is that you have enabled the automatic updates from Microsoft. It will restart itself when a critical updates has applied automatically. It restarts mine over this 4th of July long weekend. =)

System restarts after Windows Logo
If the System Restarts in Loop after the Compaq Logo, the issue might be with the Corrupted OS files. Performing the following steps to resolve that:
Step 1:
Try performing a Last Known Good Configuration.
To start your computer by using the last known good configuration:
1. Start your computer.
2. When you see Compaq logo, tap F8 key.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu is displayed, use the arrow keys to select "Last Known Good Configuration" (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
Step 2:
Try System Restore in Windows XP.
Restart the Presario in Safe Mode. Please follow these steps to go to Safe Mode:
1. Restart the computer and as soon as you see the Compaq logo. press the F8 key. This will take you to a Menu.
2. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.
This will take you to the Safe Mode.
1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
2. Click Start and then click All Programs.
3. Click Accessories.
4. Click System Tools and then click System Restore. System Restore will start.
5. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time and then click Next.
6. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the "On this list, click a restore point" list and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear listing the configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
7. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore will restore the previous Windows XP configuration and restart the computer.
8. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page will appear.
9. Click OK.

If the System Restore fails to work or if the system fails to boot in Safe Mode, try the System Restore in Command Prompt. Here are the steps:
1. Turn on the computer, and press the 'f8' key to get to the XP boot menu.
2. Choose "Safe mode with command prompt".
3. At the command prompt, type the following EXACTLY as written here:
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
4. Press 'enter'.
5. The system restore console will appear.
6. Select the date when there was no issues on the system.
The above will be effected and the system would need to be restarted. Upon restart, the issue should be resolved.
Step 3:
If Step 1 & 2 fails to work, try Windows XP Repair. And if that too fails to work, perform Full System Restore.
(Note: Repair Installation Steps and Full System Restore steps are available in Agent Bench Corner-ABC).
Good Luck and Happy Browsing
Regards,
Prasad.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
