Main dealers will tell you when belt should be changed, its worth the call as major damage will be caused if belt snaps, pistons meeting with valves! its usually every 65,000 miles or every 5years which ever is the sooner.

Length of time is nonsense. Yes if the cars over 5 years and hasn't reached the manufacturers advised miles then do it.
I think its 50k on the VW but anything over 40k I'd be inclined to do it. Do the water pump, pulleys and tensioner at the same time.

That should be spelled out in the maintenance section of your owner's manual. If you've lost it, any VW main dealer can tell you. Lacking any specific advice, 60,000 miles is a safe number to use. If you're much past that, get it changed as a snapped belt can destroy an engine.

i might exchange it at 40k to be on the risk-free side. Your R reg automobile could desire to have had a minimum of one exchange maybe 2 (what number miles has it completed?), so if it hasn't had any you're on very risky/high priced floor. exchange it now.

A better guide is to measure by years - change every 5 yrs even if you don't do average mileage.
Normally though most garages will say (I think) about every 40,000
