Hey Dude,
YES. When all this started, it was cute. It isn't cute anymore.
Get some sort of legit removal tool. Never trust a tool that claims to remove itself!
Get http://www.lavasoft.com and http://www.ccleaner.com . There are also a bunch of other ones out there that are good. Windows defender is pretty good.

Spyware is basically a short form for "Spy Software." By definition, it is only as harmful as the information it relays off your computer. Generally speaking I don't like the idea, and would remove it, but some information may or may not actually be harmful (e.g. anonymous browsing/consumer habits).
However, many spyware authors write these programs to compete with other spyware/adware programs, and make themselves tied into windows so they're difficult to remove. This in turn can cause serious harm to windows, thus causing your system to be unstable.
You should also remember that any software will slow down your computer, including spyware/adware.
Many users including programmers who write spyware removal software often mix the terms (as there isn't an official term) for adware and spyware. Meaning if you've detected spyware, it could actually be adware. Adware is advertisement software, which is generally undesired.
Hope this helps,
Ken

If you try a new anti-virus, be sure to uninstall the old one first. But before you do all that; Reboot into SAFE mode. Just hit the F8 key during the startup sequence, but BEFORE the first Windows screen appears. Timing is critical, so wait for it. Pick SAFE mode from the black menu that comes up. Then run your anti-virus scan while in safe mode.
I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
Good luck and Happy Computing!
Regards,
Prasad.
