one string to the next?? ive read somewhere that you should go start from the top, then go to the bottom to have balanced tension, and then back to the top. so on standard tuning, its e-e-a-b-d-g

Dunno.! As I an blessed with 'Perfect Pitch', such cannot really bother me..

The MAIN thing, is to choose a HEAVIER-guage OF strings -and -0f course- tune it in DOUBLE-dropped 'D'.

The main reason for this is that you THEN have a very simple 'G" chord:
-by placing your thumb across the FIFTH frett!

P,S: Heavier strings can 'hack' being "tuned below".. 'E'
(but you MUST have a perfectly straight neck -if you tighten them up TO "E"..
-as (with 12's, THEY ARE blxxdy TIGHT! (-but I'm always thinking about gittin' a new "twelve''..
. (Chuuck your electric-tuner away: the human ear is FAR more sensitive than THAT thing)! "Practice-makes-ears-prfect",, Just use it to get 'central' "D", right -then do the rest your self..

P.S: Did you know that Keith Rishard -0f 'The Stones' has a humbuckered Telecaster with a 5- string nut, -and tunes just FIVE strings.. in someting wierd, like D,A,D,G,A,D -thereabouts.

(Maybe) uses it for low-volume-but'crazed' Chuck Berry riffs.. (I do NOT know)..
He NEVER "overplays: insists he's a 'Rhythum Gts' -but I call him a Leader.. A very judicious player, indeed; Seek out his (10-year-old), "Main Offender": worth every centavo -to the budding bandsman!

(You gotta appreciate the ROOTS o' Rock!) -you follow?

Standar tuning of a guitar (highest to lowest) is:
EBGDAE
which I guess you already know. When tuning to drop D, you only tune the low E to D. You can do this by ear, but an electronic tuner or tuning fork is much easier.

I go from the 6th to the 5th to the 4th to the 3rd to the 2nd to the 1st. You have to tune to 6th down two notes and the others just one, so I go from the 6th down.
