Islands of Chile
The islands of Chile are as varied as landscapes can be. Easter Island has a Polynesian culture that may have it's roots from South America. Identifiable stone statues called moai are surrounded by volcanic formations. Scuba diving, horseback riding, and archaeological tours are attractions on the island.
Robinson Crusoe Island is even more remote with green hills and fantastic unspoiled dive sites and shipwrecks. Named by Daniel Defoe's book, it's a mountainous island paradise few travelers visit. Walk the rugged trails of the heavily forested interior to visit the sights of the island and for glimpses of the bird and wildlife. SCUBA diving here offers opportunities for wreck diving.
Often visited as a day trip from the Lakes Region, Chiloe Island is a rural community with a distinct culture, unique architecture, sweeping vistas, tasty local dishes, sea kayaking and wildlife. Well worth a stop over to gather insight of the area and the people, the accommodations are comfortable. Sea Kayakers may wish to join a 3 to 7 night program for days filled with unique landscapes and varying conditions.
Tierra del Fuego is the largest island in South America, separated by the Strait of Magellan from the mainland, and divided between Chile and Argentina. Although more touristed on the Argentina side, from Punta Arenas board the ferry over the Straits of Magellan to Puerto Porvenir to tour the Chilean Fireland as a day trip with a flight back. Fisherman will want to experience the remote fishing at Tierra del Fuego Lodge on the Rassmussen River. They will transport their guests throughout the area for a variety of conditions and types of fish.
Although island hopping is not what comes first to mind when visiting Chile, please contact us if you would like to incoporate one or more of the varied islands into your next Chile adventure.
