Perhaps something has happened in the past that has shyed him away from girl "friends".
Either that, or he might have feelings if it is a particular person that he is avoiding, and not wanting to accept it on a "friend only" basis.
I think some guys do not have the ability to accept girls in the friend only capacity. I have never understood that because I find that women are much easier to talk to when its matters of the heart.

he likes her, he no longer likes her, he knows she likes HIM but doesn't want to hurt her feelings, he heard something bad about her, his friends are making fun of him, she smells...could be any number of reasons
