I recently moved into an apartment and the cabinets smell bad, it even makes the glasses smell funny, I tried cleaning them out with lysol but now it smells worse. My landlord said they were recently painted and maybe that is why they smell but didn't recommend any solutions, anyone have any ideas on how to get that awful smell out.

If it is not a problem with the paint, try a solution of 1 gallon hot water, 1 cup baking soda, 1 small bottle of peroxide and a couple drops of dish soap. This works great on skunk smell and if it doesn't help your cabinets, I'd say you're SOL. More than likely, the landlord painted without cleaning the cabinet and trapped whatever was there under the paint. If that is the case the cabinets would need stripped, cleaned and repainted. Good luck

Well try to take the shelves out in the sun (if applicable) and leave the doors of the cupboards open for a week with nothing inside. Try also putting some charcoal in them, this tends to suck bad smells out of things.

Hope this works for you.

If all your cleaning efforts fail, I would suggest you repaint them with BIN - its a sealer/primer that will seal in any odors and about the best there is out on the market for such purposes.
BIN can be used on any surface without sanding and its what is used to seal in a lot of smoke smell in fires.
Here is the web site if you would like to read more about it - but I recommend it to many of my customers and they thank me cause it usually saves them a lot of work.

Try putting baking soda on the shelves let sit over night then take a wet rag and wipe down. Remember baking soda absorbs
odor.
