My guys wouldn't do anything intentional to mess up the new stove, but I am wondering if I would be smarter to get the coil with the type of use it might get. I'm worried about being too "old fashioned", but want to be practical. Any horror stories to deter me from taking a chance on the smoothtop? Those of you with smoothtops, are you happy, or do you think coil is better in the long run? (model I'm looking at has coated drip-pans that clean in the self-clean mode, which would solve the biggest negative of coil for me). Asked a few days ago, but still undecided and wanting more input. Thanks!

Smoothtop The best!! Coils are much more work to clean and keep clean. Smmothtops are great. But the cleaner for them read directions. To let it dry to a haze. IMPORTANT keep a razor scraper nearby and run in over the top to remove caked on stuff and wipe with a clean dry wash cloth or hand towel

Two years ago when we remodeled, the old coil stove went out and I got a smoothtop.

I love it in all ways except one. It cleans much easier but in only two years the center of one of the burners has turned black.
I have seen this on stoves with the smoothtop in yard sales.

The top cleans so much better than the old coil with pans etc.

This one you can use a razor blade for any boil overs (that is what they recommend) and Sears sells the cleaner for the top. You just wash it down with a sponge and the cleaner and that is pretty much it.

Mine is a self cleaning Kenmore with a warmer burner in the center back (I use it a lot).

Good Luck Choosing.

I have a glass top ,I hate it.I've had it 2 years ,I had to buy new pots and pans,it mars from everything cooked on it,hot syrup drips burn the glass and pit it , the list goes on,the only thing I like about it is the oven is self clean and its a combination convection or regular oven,if I was buying a new stove again I promise I would buy the type with coils,I would never complain about cleaning them again!

I used a smoothtop stove before, and the only problem I had was if the pan was slightly larger than the burner, it caused a dark stain on the stovetop. Sounds like a good stove you are looking at with pans. That would solve the problem I was having. I like the thought of less cleaning too. Good luck with your decision.

HATE THE FLAT TOP I just replaced mine with a new coil type stove, they are easier to repair, I can replace the drip pans etc, The flat top stove scrathched very easily and I found myself cleaning ,scraoing etc to keep the finish clean, I hated it. My flat top stove was in my home when I purchased it, I have lived here for one year and that is how long it took to replace my stove.

The experience that I have had with the smooth top stoves is that they get scratched easily and the "paint" or whatever they use on the top to mark where the burners are and just the top in general....it gets worn off after repeated cleanings....and not after like a year of repeated cleanings but after just a couple of months.
