I thought it was cliched, everything had been done so many times before, American Ferrara is brilliant but she's obviously beautiful really and from the pilot it is obvious what the whole season story arch is going to be. It will also get a lot better when they stop the same "your ugly" jokes as it looks like next weeks episode will be more or less the same as this weeks. Ugly Betty, the latest in a long line of successful American Imports is a flawed but decent new comedy series. However the hypothesis of the show in it’s very nature is flawed beyond the Bridget Jones’ knockoff it’s tries so hard not to be. For example, It’s title is a lie, Betty is not ugly… at all. If you have seen any (American) film or TV Show where an ugly duckling takes on the world of fashion/dating/journalism etc etc, the ugly duckling herself is usually a beautiful actress hidden behind glasses, braces, dungarees or tom boy attitude. If the show is dependent on an actress also being “fat” then a curvy actress is usually cast and placed alongside a brace of the standard supermodels to make her look in comparison; obese. There are countless examples; In the 1999 film She’s All That, “Ugly Duckling” Laney Boggs is merely a beautiful girl hidden behind glasses and some smudges of paint whilst we are constantly reminded that she is a loser, a geek, ugly, smelly and stupid. We know she isn’t; it’s an obvious assumption, the glasses don’t really hide anything, if Kate Moss were to wear glasses in a photo shoot; would we instantly think she was ugly? The filmmakers know that we are not entirely stupid so by casting stereotypical beauties and ascertaining to the audience that the ugly duckling could not, will not, would not ever really become a Cinderella with some cheap pair of frames from vision express. Constantly affirming to us that she is the girl that to “everyone here who matters, you're vapor, you're spam, a waste of perfectly good yearbook space, and nothing's ever gonna change that,1”. Yeah like totally…Ugly Betty also shares a lot in common with Sara Rue lead comedy Less Than Perfect (2002-2006), For Four Seasons, the show’s running joke was that Rue was full figured woman and thus less than perfect, despite Rue being a size 10 at the start of the series which is a norm/average in America, but rarely portrayed and is known in the world of television are still being fat, despite most of the people who watch the thin bodied lovelies on the CW being the average anyway. Sara Rue had lost in total thirty pounds when the show ended in July 2006, and was more or less perfect. Which brings us to America Ferrera, who despite being a curvy latino woman could never be described as ugly, and says in her own IMDB profile "I think Hispanic women are beautiful with their curves. I'm not sure who feels that way in Hollywood. I was never told to lose 50 pounds. If they think that they just don't bother with you. You just don't get the role and you never know why. That's still better than physically harming yourself and becoming unhealthy just to star in a movie.2" While from watching the first few episodes of the series, Ferrara is a charming and ironically cute ugly Betty. I just don’t understand why the young actress who auditioned that actually was ugly wasn’t given the role of her dreams. There’s got to be hundreds if not thousands of less than perfect women working in Los Angeles Restaurants who could represent all us uglies out there and star as a Ugly Betty, Right?
Probably will watch it next week

I thought is was quite good for a first episode where they inevitably have to spend time introducing the characters. Betty herself isn't what I was expecting. I thought she would be a dumb nerd who gets swept along into a good job when she's actually a smart cookie and quite confident but just has no interest in playing along with the dumb fashion industry. I'll be watching it again.

I've watch the first 10 episodes and its great.
The mysterious caller bit is a little stupid but hopefully that'll work its way out soon.
The storylines are really funny and you get to love all the characters once they start developing properly.

i in my opinion like this practice, or maximum folk of it any way. it truly is a slice of company existence--nicely, exagerrated one thousand% inspite of the indisputable fact that it truly is humorous. the extreme characterizations of Vanessa Williams, Becki Newton and Michael Urie (i imagine it truly is him) make this practice nicely worth gazing. and it does not damage even as Hayek or her lady Hollywood friends to take position (Liu, Gershon). grrrrrr.. the relationship stuff with Betty is slightly dull to me because there's a lot different stuff happening and diverse different interesting characters. the affection stuff is merely too accepted in a convention like this.

i really don't care for it . They over exaggerated a less than beautiful actress by making her Ugly and putting ridiculous clothes on her , that NO ONE would wear to a place of high fashion , intentionally.

I saw the original Spanish version from Colombia, and it was super good--- the English one is different, but it has its similarities... I do have to catch up though, haven't seen all of them.
