ballet dancers dont dance on their toes for the sake of being taller. the pointe shoe is in a way the essential instrument for ballet dancers, it is what they've worked hard to achieve for years.. to be able to dance on pointe. it's like learning how to ride a bike without training wheels. you start with training wheels and once you get better they come off... same thing with pointe shoes, once you get better in ballet they come on... =)

not really, cause they'd just make them dance around with their knees bent or something. Sounds like it would hurt your back.
