You can try to use the moden to dial a mobile that you own. this will tell you if the modem is working. Open up network connections, click create new connection, then select connect to internet, then set up connection manually, then connect using a dial up modem, enter ISP name - type anything!, then enter the mobile number, then click past the next screen (account info screen), then finish.

Now double click on the connection you have created and click connect\dial. The modem should dial the mobile number and the mobile should ring. If this works you know the modem is working and you should be able to setup the internet. The easiest way to do this is by using an ISP cd like wannadoo which you can pick up from PC world or currys

I also bought an Advent PC some 7 years ago and had the same problem. After returning it several times to PC World they owned up to the fact that the Modem was faulty and replaced. Worked fine after that.

PS. Advent is commercial name for PC World PC's.

I need to ask a few questions first:

1) Is this the only source computer in your home or work place your trying to access the internet from?.

2) Are you in an area where your not allowed to access the internet?.. ie school

having said this, Lets suppose your in your home and you have more then one computer. You may need to allow for another ip assignment to your laptop. it is possible to log your laptop, without another ip, by use of a router/switch. The router will assign a host ip number to your laptop.

If you do not have a router and you connect via a "hub" similar to a router without a "Nat" system installed. The hub simply allows multiple connections but you must have a different ip per computer.

Also checking your "host" or "network" card's site, can offer some advice. If nothing is available for you network card, try other site that have "Learning centers" ie http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Content_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1114037291160&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

This learning center will have tutorials to help guide you though some tuff issues.

Daft one I know but - is it connected to a phone line? (there can be 2 sockets that look like phone inputs - try both)

Have you loaded any ISP software? (BT, Wanadoo, NTL etc)

Try opening internet explorer and at the top click on Tools - then - Internet options - then select the Connections tab. Click the set up box to make a new connection and follow the promts.

Failing that call the help line.

Good luck.
