Ok, firstly you don't just plug in a cable and 'it works'. It's a bit more complex than that. As mentioned above, if you plug a cable directly between 2 computers it must be a crossover cable. If you have a hub or switch between them both then a normal patch cable is used.

You need to go into your control panel> Network Connections> Right click your network adapter> properties.

Once there, you need to select TCP/IP, click properties button.

Select 'use this IP address' and insert your own private 192 IP address (EG 192.168.0.1). The second computer must be in the same IP range for it's network connection - EG 192.168.0.2.

Then you must set the subnet on both (must be the same for both) EG 255.255.255.0

Then you must set the default gateway - The network IP of your router or computer which is directly connected to the internet. The DNS section at the bottom should also be the same - the router or the computer which has the direct connection.

Once you've done all that, click ok on all the windows. Both computers should then be able to see eachother in 'MY Network Places'.

If you like my answer, consider voting for it.

If you're running software firewalls like zone alarm you also need to get the ip of each machine and create an entry in the trusted zone section, without that it doesn't matter what you do the machines wont communicate, of course if you are just connection between two machines and aren't online then try just turning the firewall software off - just make sure you turn it back on when you go online!

how are you doing the LAN?

For a lan between 2 systems to work really well you require a UPT CAT 5 cross over lan cable...

from there ensure you run the 'home network wizard' through the XP control panel.

Failing that, install additional protocalls and modify to ensure a lan feed is successful.

if you are not tech minded and want an easy way to do this , go buy a couple of bluetooth dongles (ive seen em now for a fiver) and just plug em in . You may have to bridge a network between the two pc's , thats easy enough just go controlpanel network connections an d from there it should be easy enough!

Do you mean you are plugging the cables into each computer? Do you use a switch in between? If you are going computer to computer without a switch you'll need an ethernet crossover cable, not a standard ethernet patch cable.
