The Super Bowl IS the NFL Championship.

There are two separate conferences, whose champions meet in the Super Bowl. The AFC and the NFC have completely separate playoff setups. In each conference, six teams make the playoffs, the four division champions (North, South, East, West) and the next two best records. The two division champions with the best records get byes in the first round. The other four play, with the other two division champions getting the 3 and 4 seeds, the two wild cards getting the 5 and 6 seeds. In that round, 6 plays at 3 and 5 plays at 4.

The two winners advance to play the 1 and 2 seeds, with the lowest seed remaining going to play the 1 seed and the other winner going to play the 2 seed. Thus, if the 6 seed wins in the first round, they go to play the 1 seed, while the 4/5 winner visits the 2 seed. If the 3 seed wins, they go to play the 2 seed, and the 4/5 winner goes to play the 1 seed.

The seeds in each conference this year:
AFC - 1 San Diego 2 Baltimore 3 Indianapolis 4 New England 5 NY Jets 6 Kansas City
NFC - 1 Chicago 2 New Orleans 3 Philadelphia 4 Seattle 5 Dallas 6 NY Giants

Since Indianapolis won, they will go to Baltimore and the winner of the New England/NY Jets game goes to San Diego. In the NFC, Seattle must wait to see who wins the Philadelphia/NY Giants game before they know where they're headed. If Philadelphia wins, the Eagles go to New Orleans and Seattle goes to Chicago. If the Giants win, they go to Chicago and the Seahawks head to New Orleans.

If the Eagles win, they will play the New Orlean Saints. If the Giants win, they will play the Chicago Bears. I believe that the Colts play the Baltimore Ravens next week. Not sure about the Jets/Patriots.

The first playoff round with the wild cards and bye week for some teams is complicated. This shows it best.

the first thing you need to understand is that AFC teams play AFC teams through the PLAYOFFS and the same with the NFC.

in the SUPERBOWL, it's the best NFC team against the best AFC team (the colts)
