Four years ago i completed a film and media degree and thus far have been pretty unsucessful with finding any work. And when i do the employers seem to offer something in the region of £12,000 a year. Which i personally find insulting! I have also had to work in the construction industry where the pay relates to the workload and your qualifications. After a 3 year degree i expect a minimum of £18,000. And im kind of past hearing 'you have to start from the bottom'. With the amount of graduates with media degrees now is it possible to the money will drop further. For every 100 graduates there must be one job, or maybe its worse than that!

I agree with you. I went through the same thing. I think the degree is a waste of time in any country, if you expect to be paid big bucks when you graduate. Unfortunately, a career in media is one of those areas where you have to start somewhere, because there's always someone behind you who's willing to work for free if you don't want the job. I've heard of people that worked for record labels in Los Angeles for free....and they worked a 40 hour work week! That's why these companies feel like they can pay you low wages.
I majored in Radio-TV, worked at three radio stations. I dealt with low paying jobs and got tired of struggling, always having to work two jobs.
I put Communications on my resume now because I think it looks better. Now I'm a school librarian....long story. LOL!
If I could change things, I would've majored in something else and minored in media.
Another thing I noticed in college, most of my professors tried to make it in the field, now they're teaching.....says a lot.

Yep! My degree is in Film, Television and Media Studies. I went to university in New Zealand and got my first job there, which was a great job (working for a multinational film distributor) and I was paid well.

But I then moved to London. The only jobs that I could find were paying in the region of £12,000 - £15,000. Whilst it's nice to be able to have a job that you enjoy doing, you honestly cannot support yourself on that kind of money (bearing in mind that as a foreigner, I have no family to provide any kind of support).

Not having qualifications or experience for anything else, I started doing secretarial work, because at least then I could earn around £22k. However, your pride definitely takes a knock when you are degree-educated and all of your colleagues dropped out of school at 15, yet you're all doing the same thing and getting paid the same.

I advise that you give up any hope of working in the media. Pick a career where they just require any degree and don't care what it is. I'm now working in recruitment in the IT industry and I love it - in fact it's probably more fun than when I used to work for the film distribution company.

There was a time when a university or collage degree was an advantage, but with the opening of the curriculum to STUPID subjects, to boost the coffers, they are now worthless, unless they think a degree in media studies, arts and crafts, dance or Klingon are actually going to get them a job in the workplace......lol

Nothing should be a waste of time unless yo amke it so for you and your life. What is your goal what do you want to acheive then when you have this upper most in your mind then and only then proceed to your choosen future options in work. Otherwise for get it it is just a rat race.

Aren't you glad you didn't chose an intellectually challenging degree like beauty therapy?
