Depending on just what you want to achieve, you may not need to convert the file. If you are mainly interested in the text, rather than any images and layout details, you can copy and paste. Open the pdf in Adobe reader, select the 'Select' tool (depending on Adobe version it may be called something else - earlier versions distinguished between text select and graphic select), select the text, copy it and then paste into Word.

A pdf is not, by the way, "a picture that has been taken of a text file". It is closely related to a postscript printer file and the text is (usually) text and (often) entirely editable if you know how.

In Reader 7, Use Menu item | Edit | Select All or Ctrl A to select all the items in the PDF File OR Use the -- Select Tool -- from the tool bar and select the items you want to copy. Copy the data to the Windows Clipboardand paste into Word. Edit as usual.

You might also DL a free copy of Foxit PDF Reader at

and use it in place of Adobe Reader. It's free and is only 1.5 Mb vs Adobe 20 mb size. Very handy reader with a ton of functions.

Cheers

It depends on which version of office you are using. MS Office 2007 has a full utility for converting and editing PDF files.

Not unless you have the full version of adobe! A pdf file is an image file. Its simply a picture that has been taken of a text file. You might at best paste it into your document.
