The requirement of type of treatment for a slipped disc or Prolapsed inter vertebral disc (PIVD) depends on many factors. The most important of these is whether there is any associated neurological deficit-meaning whether there is any tingling or numbness or weakness in the feet or legs, whether there is any effect on bladder or bowel-whether patient is not able to control there function etc.If there is any neurological deficit , patient in all probability will require surgery which can be a conventional open discectomy or a microdiscectomy done by a Neurosurgeon. These days even a replacement of a damaged disc is possible. If surgery is not required ( as assesed by the doctor) in that case a long term back muscle strengthening excercise programme is the most useful treatment.Weight reduction and modified life style are also important.Forward bending should be avoided.

You don't say where the slipped disc is. Therapies are different depending on location. Bed rest, pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxers. This followed by physical therapy. If pain does not respond to initial treatments, cortisone shots are usually recommended. If cortisone shots are not helpful, a surgical consult usually follows, although this should be a last resort only.
Some people find relieve through chiropractic, or alternative medicines like acupuncture. Good luck.

Have someone rub the injured area with ice. Get physical therapy. On the days you do not have PT walk for half an hour (slowly) or swim for half an hour in water that is 90 degrees or warmer. Bed rest actually sets you back. The muscles weaken and there is more pain with bedrest. Apply heat and ice. Take ibuprophen.
