Einstein's most famous contributions were his theories of special relativity and general relativity. He also described the photoelectric effect with a photon model, which got him a Nobel prize. He also did a lot with statistical physics. He released theories about Brownian motion of gasses, and Bose-Einstein quantum statistics were developed, in part, by him. He also derived coefficients describing emission and apsorption of light by atoms using quatum mechanics. He also did some work with specific heats of solids. Oh yes, and some work on viscosity of fluids. He probably did some other stuff I forgot to mention or of which I have never heard.

He did a lot of stuff.

He did theoretical work in topics of physics, meaning that he "discovered" the mathematical underpinnings of these topics and applied them to the explanation of existing problems. SInce many of his discoveries were beyond the ability of laboratory experiment at the time of their publication (his essential work came out in 1905), Einstein became known for the gedanken, or "thought" experiment.

Several areas of theoretical discovery were in the topics of Brownian motion, the photoelectric effect, special relativity, and general relativity.
