The accusations were as a result of hearsay or word on the street. The accuser says he has not gone to the police. He will not discuss the situation with me, so I do not know who gave the original information.
what should I do?

You need to get witnesses, & you need to get advice from the Citizens' Advice Bureau. If the accuser has said he isn't going to the police, you have some breathing space, but I would say someone with a grudge against you wants to stir up trouble for you. Try to resist the urge to go finding out who it is for yourself, or you could make matters worse.

I would insist on him going to the police, or apologising to you for the defamation caused. Just accusing you and then keeping quiet is not on! Make this clear to him and let him know how annoyed you are.

If you are innocent the unjust accuser is guilty of defamation. Your employer should get to the bottom of this. Report it. It is the only way to clear your name and get your reputation back.
