Go to a store, try on several. Find the one you like that fits you the best without undue pressure points (this means you'll have to keep it on for awhile). This is the best way to know how it will feel once you're out and about with the helmet on constantly.
Pick out one or two that fit you the best, that way, if you go online to a retailer and they don't have your first choice..perhaps they'll have your second choice.

Then, go online to http://www.denniskirk.com and find the same model you found in the store and buy it. It will cost less and be of equal quality.

All helmets here in the USA are DOT certified by law. The Snell certification has come under fire recently but any helmet is better than no helmet at all.

Oh, and make sure there's EPS (the protective stuff in the shell of the helmet) in the chinbar. Some companies don't do that, and the end result of a collision between your chin and the street could be dramatically different if there's no EPS in the chinbar.
Good luck and have fun biking!!

Go to a store and try one on and buy it. OR you can take a chance that MAYBE you might get lucky the first time when you GUESS your head size and order one online.

try at the store then buy online, however some manufacturers (e.g. Arai) refuse to supply companies that sell on-line or mail-order.

Death wish or WHAT!
Go to a store, and try it on, grab the back of the helmet and try to pull it back off.
If you can pull it off, it is to big, and it WILL come off in a spill, get the next size down.

TRY DOING THAT ONLINE!!!!

go try on in store to find your size, then look online. there are ads in the back of the m/c mags they often will offer low prices.
