i think everything is predetermined but your choices shape your life. like if you choose one thing, it is predetermined that your life will be a certain way. if you choose something else, it is predetermined that your life will be a different certain way. i hope this makes sense.
yes, it does count whether or not we tried our best.

No, everything is NOT predetermined. Absolutely not.
The only thing that is close is nature, so that everything works as it should, like the planets in their orbits and so forth. Our lives are ours to do what we want with. We create our own reality and need to realize this. We are not victims. We are not helpless puppets of some god. We are god. A good example of what would happen if we didn't all try our best is what is going on in the world right now. The majority of the human population is so ignorant of the fact that we are NOT victims and have no idea that they can actually CHANGE the world by their thoughts and actions and are NOT ruled by a god but by us. It counts. It counts more than you know.

No predetermination, it is the causes of certain humans and those experiences produced by these humans and the affects of humanities actions . If oil is dumped in the ocean who will suffer. Pollution does a lot of damage to our atmosphere, Satellites. Earth did not determine itself as our planet, humans however, have a brain. Earth provides and certain humans take until this planet cannot deliver this need any more. Nothing last forever.

I believe that most all our opportunities are predetermined- what we choose to do wth them is choice and the consequences only then are revealed. Yes, It is our human duty to try our best- everytime, all the time.
“Success means doing the best we can with what we have. Success is the doing, not the getting; in the trying, not the triumph. Success is a personal standard, reaching for the highest that is in us, becoming all that we can be.” ~ Zig Ziglar
“Control your own destiny or someone else will.” ~ Jack Welch
“Sow a thought, and you reap an act; Sow an act, and you reap a habit; Sow a habit, and you reap a character; Sow a character, and you reap a destiny” ~ Charles Reade

It you believe that there is no free will, that everything is predetermined, then you have no motivation for doing your best, or even doing anything.
We will never know whether (there is a difference between WHETHER and WEATHER, by the way) we or anyone have free will, but we should always act as though we do, because otherwise, we are mindless automotons and our lives are essentially meaningless.
As you said, it makes no sense to do our best if everything we do is preordained.

To know if everything is predetermined, you only have to find someone who already knows everything to come in future. Well, that's not me nor anyone I know. (And, in any case, trying to probe such a person wrong would be very interesting, don't you thing so?)
Can you find such a person or not, our life and history is made up of our actions and there is no doubt that if you try your best you will be more likely to get what you want

Perform an expirament.
Make a decision in the color of frosting you want on your cupcake. Make the cupcake.
The next day, change your mind, lick off all the frosting and put a different color on it.
The day after change your mind again, repeat licking activity, apply a third color.
On the fourth day when you finally eat the stale cupcake, think about which color destiny would have chosen for you if you hadn't overridden it's power over you several days in a row.

A bullet fired from a gun has a pre-determined course of travel, relative to its range, direction, etc. But the wind blowing would alter slightly the ultimate reach to the target by a few Milli-meters!
The next bullet is the choice of the person using the gun.
Such choices are there even in our effort and 'trying our best' .

I do not believe everything in life is predetermined I believe everything is "preknown" by God. Its like with my children I can tell you 98% of the time what they will choose, even though they have free will, because I know them and God knows us completely, so therefore knows 100% of the time what we will choose. With my children it does matter if they try their best I totally consider their intent and effort........and therefore I believe God does too.......he is the ultimate parent.

I agree with je t'adore up there. I believe that our path is already written for us, but our choices determine which certain path to take as there are many. To me, life is like a book, it's a contunuing story and you have to wait to find out what happens at the end... :)
