If everything in life remained static, I believe little progress would have been made. Whilst you may be nostlagic about the past glories of the FA, today's tournaments are still exciting, more so if your team is doing well.
Look at yesterday's game between Liverpool and Arsenal, wasn't that exciting ? Both teams fielded their best line ups, but as in every game, a winner had to emerge, and Arsenal won. I hope you will watch the ManU v Aston Villa game this afternoon and if you still harbour such views, then you just have to live with your yesteryear memories and leave those who support the game indiscriminately, continue to do so, for life was not meant to be constant.

Too many other competitions where clubs are striving to win money.
Yesterday, Sheffield Utd dropped/rested over half a dozen players because staying in the Premiership was more important and the odds against them winning the cup was remote.
What you did not have in the 70's and 80's were European competitions played on a league basis.
Also, Steve Bruce said yesterday - "The price of tickets for the average person, to watch an FA cup match, are so high that people are staying away. We had a crowd of 16,000 today and 4,000 of those were from Newcastle."

Yeah, the game aint as physical when lower teams could offset their lack of skill/fitness with a bit of steel in the tackle. Get Chelsea/Leeds cup final and watch two gifted teams going hard at it(and of course the replay) I watched some great games in the 70s all teams had a bit of everything,I always would like to see Ronaldo being marked by Tommy Smith, or maybe Mike Pejic the Stoke city f/b.

I think its because there is too much money at the top end of the game.
Before the 80s, lower league and non-league teams always had a chance against the big teams. These days, the big teams are full of international players even in their reserve sides, and they rarely field full-strength sides and can still win in second gear. Its very sad.

You're right. European competitions are so lucrative by comparison that they take priority. In addition, its acknowledge that we in the UK play too many games so any team fighting for survival/promotion will want to reduce the number of matches... Its a shame by the way, the FA Cup was always one of the major events looked forward to by all football fans.

i hate knock-out football on a whole....the best team doesn't always prevail, and isn't that the whole point? can't go wrong with the league
