IE:
find the Tools icon on the tool bar ,choose 'Tools'/Pop-up blocker/Turn on Pop-up blocker.
If you can't find that ,then try this way ,hit IE icon with right click,choose property,then press Privacy ,you can see the option 'Turn on pop-up blocker ',mark it.
At last ,press 'OK'
Firefox:
At the top of the window ,Tools/Options/Content,mark the 'Block pop-up windows'

Some additional tool bar also offers that feature ,like Yahoo, Google .
Yahoo:
Toolbar Options/Pop-up blocker ....
'OK'
Google:
manage/more/enable pop-up blocker..
'OK'

Get a spam cleaner, I find that spybot S&D works best. clean your computer after 1-3 intenet sessions to keep from getting pop ups.

adaware wil remove the ones off your machine that have aready popped up and firewall will prevent them from popping up
