Termite exterminators have access to some restricted chemicals that will last at least 5 years and depending on the chemical maybe more. The chemical they use may depend on what state you live in. Some chemicals are banned in some states and restricted in others. There is nothing you can buy at a lawn and garden center over-the-counter that will last more than 6 weeks or so.

Chlordane did last a long time but it had a bad habit of moving from where you put it--and it lasted so long it usually ended up in the water table. Not all "good" chemicals are good to live around and the EPA doesn't just ban a chemical because it was "good".

Most pest managment systems are "integrated" because chemicals alone can not be 100% effective. If you keep stacking cordwood next to your house, for example, you will keep introducing the pests. An important part of integrated pest management is to modify the environment to discourage the termites in the first place. Keeping crawl spaces dry, well-ventilated, etc. Also, they need an entry point.
The lasting treatment for termites is complete ecosystem failure.

Chlordane, but the do-gooder tree-huggers got it banned.
